Was v frustrated with the pre- and post-race logistics ... the Metro station jogjam. Felt like that made me expend a lot of emotional energy. Also the mess getting out of the finishers' area. The parts of the race in the District are nice (and flat!) altho glimpses of the monuments are fleeting at best. The last several miles less than inspiring. Glad I did it once, would not come back in a hurry. All the Marines were great. |

This is a very well organized marathon. From the expo, to the start and the finish. Even the 2007 shirts looked great. My brother who lives in DC and used to be a navy officer added that it is quite normal for the Marine Corps marathon to be so well organized because they have 'free' and 'unlimited' number of volunteers: The military (unlike the other marathons who have to recruit volunteers). The organization is top notch. After all, who is more discipline than the military.
As for the course, it definitely passes through the touristic part of DC and some quieter areas (residntial areas of Georgetown and the island/park).
There is a lot of spectators to cheer you on during the race. The only lonely place is the island/part between mile 16-18, which turns out to be one fo the most difficult section for many marathoners as it is lonely and windy.
Also the fact that DC has a very clean and efficient metro/subway makes it really easy to get to the start/finish line. It may be crowded to leave after the marathon in the subway but at that point who cares? There is no stress to go anywhere. You finished, got your medal and are happy. |

The Marines are great, the crowds are enthusiastic. But the course leaves much to be desired---DC is a beautiful city, but you spend a lot of time going up and down onramps and through a park. |
